The Underwriting Manager will direct a staff of underwriters in ensuring compliance with investor and agency guidelines, and manage the department to meet or exceed the company’s stated productivity goals.  This position will be located in the regional operations center in Scottsdale servicing the east coast.  Hours will be 5:30am - 2:30pm. 

Responsibilities

Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Execute performance goals established by the VP, Underwriting and other members of the senior management team.
  • Manage the Underwriting staff to meet or exceed company standards with respect to productivity, quality and service.
  • Actively participate in company and/or departmental planning and process improvement efforts.
  • Plan for appropriate staffing levels based on set productivity standards.
  • Assist in facilitating staff meetings.
  • Manage crises or special situations as needed
  • Review all loans denied by the underwriters to determine if a resolution is possible. Communicate with loan officers and Branch Managers.
  • Maintain familiarity with standard Secondary Market requirements on all loan types and act as a liaison with Secondary Marketing and the branches with regard to offering alternative programs on loans that are deemed ineligible as initially submitted.
  • Ensure all specifics of CalAtlantic’s internal overlays are followed through daily use and interpretation.
  • Keep up-to-date on internal underwriting procedures.
  • Remain familiar with all aspects of the automated underwriting systems and how they affect loan approval decisions.
  • Communicate underwriting policies/practices/changes with appropriate branch personnel.
  • Communicate underwriting goals and turnaround times to the branches.
  • Communicate agency updates to the branches. 
  • Participate in internal training programs for designated personnel. 
  • Provide feedback or guidance as necessary to loan officers, loan processor, branch managers and other personnel to better educate them regarding the underwriting function and loan validations.
  • Work with HR to recruit and hire direct reports.
  • Initiate and monitor the application process for underwriter designations with FHA and/or VA (i.e., DE, LAPP).
  • Develop and execute training/continuing education plans for underwriting staff to ensure all staff possess the proper certifications to benefit the company.
  • Manage and motivate team members to ensure consistent and maximum performance levels.
  • Conduct annual employee reviews based on job functions and established productivity standards.
  • Participate in the development of reward/recognition programs.
  • Provide support, direction and leadership to team members and assist them with any questions/problems.
  • Work with HR to resolve any disciplinary issues and conduct terminations if necessary.
  • Conduct monthly meeting with Underwriting Supervisor on progress of goals given.
  • Conduct one on one meetings with underwriters as necessary and outlined by VP, Underwriting.
  • Prepare responses for agency or internal audits for submission to the agency auditor or internal QA department, respectively.
  • Maintain familiarity with the company’s loan originiation system.
  • Participate in outside training with HUD/VA to maintain appropriate designations.
  • Maintain branch registry with FHA/VA.
  • Assist with all other special tasks or projects as directed by management.

Qualifications

Candidates Will Need to Meet the Following Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a 4-year college or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum 5-7 years management experience.
  • Minimum 4 years underwriting and/or underwriting/operations/production experience.
  • Knowledge of conventional, FHA/VA loan types.
  • FHA Direct Endorsement.
  • VA SAR/LAPP Authority.
  • Strong overall computer skills (i.e., MS Office, automated underwriting systems).
  • Demonstrated leadership and decision-making ability.
  • Excellent organizational and team-building skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain excellent relations with internal and external entities.
  • Travel will be required (approximately 25%).
